Iran’s Navy won top honors in both the rescue and relief and shooting contests held as part of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) 2025 Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Working Group in Nowshahr.

Tehran - BORNA - The competitions, held on the sidelines of the international meeting on October 6–9 at the Imam Khomeini Naval University, brought together naval teams from Iran, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and China.

The competition aimed to enhance operational rescue skills and coordination during maritime emergencies.

During the rescue drills, participants responded to simulated distress calls, swam to a damaged vessel, located an injured person, and safely transferred the casualty to shore.

Teams then performed first aid, including checking vital signs and CPR, before moving the individual to a medical center.

At the end of the one-day contest, Iran’s four-member maritime rescue team won first place, followed by Pakistan and India in second and third positions, respectively.

Captain Abbas Kuchakian, head of sports division for Iran’s Navy, said the event marked the first time that sports competitions were held alongside the IONS Maritime Security Working Group meeting.

He noted that the contests were divided into skill-based and sporting categories, with Iran also topping the shooting events in both rifle and pistol disciplines. Pakistan and the UAE secured the next two spots.

Kuchakian described the event as an opportunity to strengthen international engagement, improve physical readiness, and promote friendship among naval forces across the Indian Ocean region.

The IONS HADR 2025 meeting was attended by representatives from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, the UAE, Indonesia, and China, with delegates from Qatar, Myanmar, France, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia joining virtually. The conference was held under the theme “Together for Maritime Safety and Security.”
