UN rapporteur: Israel-Egypt gas deal violates intl. law amid genocidal war in Palestine

Tehran - BORNA - In a post on her X account, Albanese said Egypt’s acquiring of $35 billion worth of gas from Israel breaches international law, including the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2024.

She added that the deal is an “incredible” indication of support for Israel amid its genocidal war against the people of Palestine.

“States must stop placing profits above humanity,” the UN rapporteur emphasized.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday approved a $34.7-billion natural gas deal with Egypt, claiming that the export agreement meets Israel’s “vital” needs.

In a video statement, Netanyahu and Israeli energy minister Eli Cohen said $18 billion from the $34.7 billion deal will go into Israel’s “public coffers.”

Under the deal, $155 million will go to the regime yearly in the first four years. This was expected to rise to $1.9 billion by 2033.

The gas deal is unfolding as the Israeli regime continues to deny Palestinians sovereignty over their own land and natural resources.

Analysts warn that Egypt’s new gas deal with Israel would be used as a tool of strategic and political influence in the region. However, Cairo insisted that the deal is a “purely commercial” arrangement and that there are no “political dimensions” to the deal.

At least 70,925 Palestinians have been killed and more than 171,185 wounded in Gaza since October 2023, when Israel launched its genocidal war on the besieged strip.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is investigating Israel for genocide, while Netanyahu and his former war minister, Yoav Gallant, are facing arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court for committing war crimes in Gaza.
