Orbán: Hungary Will Not Send Troops to Ukraine

Tehran - BORNA - According to a report by TASS, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke on Saturday evening, asserting: "Hungary will not take part in the military conflict in Ukraine, just as it once refused to enter the war in Yugoslavia."

Reflecting on an incident from 1999 during his first term as Prime Minister, Orbán recounted a phone call from then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, who requested Hungary’s intervention in the conflict in neighboring Yugoslavia. "NATO was conducting military operations there, and coalition aircraft were bombing Belgrade. Clinton said Anglo-Saxon soldiers were already there and a second front should be opened from Hungary's southern border. I told him: 'No, sir!'" Orbán said, met with applause from the audience.

The Hungarian Prime Minister added: "It should not be the case that when deciding on war, we respond to the U.S. President's orders by saying, 'Yes, sir.'"

Orbán has repeatedly stated that the presence of NATO forces on Ukrainian soil poses a threat of direct military conflict with Russia. He also confirmed that Hungary will neither supply weapons nor finance ongoing military operations in Ukraine.
