Nearly nine out of ten villages in Iran are now linked by paved asphalt roads, according to the transportation ministry, marking a significant expansion of rural infrastructure in the country.

Tehran - BORNA - A senior official in Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development (MRUD) said on Tuesday that the country has extended its paved asphalt road network to 86% of villages with 20 or more households.

Reza Akbari, deputy head of the MRUD and director of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization, said the total length of rural roads in Iran, including asphalt, gravel, and dirt routes, has reached 203,248 kilometers.

He noted that the length of asphalt roads connecting villages has increased by more than 3,600 kilometers over the past two years, while maintenance work has been carried out on over 12,000 kilometers of rural routes during the same period.

“This achievement is the result of the development policies of the current government and aims to improve access and upgrade transportation infrastructure in rural areas,” he said.

Iran has introduced various policies over recent decades to empower its rural communities to boost local production and reduce migration to cities.

Most Iranian villages now enjoy access to clean energy, safe drinking water, and high-speed internet, according to recent government figures.

Nearly 40,000 of the country’s roughly 55,000 villages are supplied with pipelined natural gas, a development that has helped expand Iran’s nationwide gas pipeline network to 427,000 kilometers, one of the longest in the world.
