These individuals classify millions of images, filter offensive content, and label data—tasks that are repetitive, draining, and psychologically harmful for humans, yet are crucial for algorithms to recognize patterns and function accurately.
As one labor activist succinctly put it, “They are the shadows without which AI could not exist.” These workers, often in underrepresented economies, carry the invisible weight of technological progress while being systematically deprived of fundamental labor rights, fair wages, and job security.
