In a significant step toward advancing artificial intelligence, fifteen specialized university laboratories have been established across Iran to develop and refine AI models.

Tehran - BORNA - In a strategic move to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure, fifteen specialized university laboratories have been officially launched across Iran to spearhead the development and optimization of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) models.

This initiative aims to create a robust ecosystem for the training of Large Language Models (LLMs) and various autonomous systems. By equipping these labs with high-performance computing (HPC) resources and specialized hardware, the project seeks to provide researchers and domestic knowledge-based companies with the tools necessary to compete at a global level.

The primary objective of these 15 centers is to facilitate the transition from theoretical research to practical, industrial-grade applications. These labs will serve as innovation hubs where academic elites collaborate directly with the private sector to solve complex challenges in critical sectors. In the field of healthcare, the focus is placed on developing AI-driven diagnostic tools and advancing personalized medicine to significantly improve patient outcomes.

Furthermore, these centers are dedicated to ensuring data sovereignty by creating localized AI models specifically designed to understand regional languages and accommodate unique cultural nuances. The laboratories also aim to modernize national infrastructure by utilizing machine learning to optimize energy consumption patterns and enhance the overall efficiency of telecommunication networks.

Beyond technical development, these facilities are designated as national training grounds. As the global AI landscape evolves rapidly, these labs will host specialized research programs to cultivate a highly skilled workforce, ensuring that top-tier facilities are available to specialists within the country.

This project is part of a broader national mandate led by the Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy. Officials emphasize that self-reliance in AI is a strategic necessity for both economic growth and national security. The data processed within these labs will follow strict security protocols to ensure the integrity of national digital assets while fostering an environment for scientific breakthroughs. As these 15 laboratories become fully operational, Iran expects a significant surge in indigenous AI technologies and the emergence of new startups capable of providing specialized AI services to both domestic and international markets.
