UK, Canada, and Australia Recognize State of Palestine
In a coordinated move, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have formally recognized the State of Palestine, joining a growing list of Western countries taking this step.

Tehran - BORNA - The prime ministers of the three countries each issued separate statements on Saturday announcing their decisions.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared recognition of an independent Palestinian state while also accusing Hamas of having “no place in the future of Palestine.” He stated: “Hopes for a two-state solution are fading, but we must not allow this light to be extinguished.” Starmer also announced new sanctions against Hamas, framing them as part of London’s effort to keep prospects for peace and a two-state solution alive.

In Ottawa, the office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement: “Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and stands ready to partner in realizing the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and Israel.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese likewise confirmed Canberra’s recognition, writing in his office’s statement: “Australia, as of Sunday, September 21, recognizes the independent and sovereign State of Palestine.”

Albanese linked his country’s move to those of the UK and Canada, describing it as part of a “coordinated international effort to breathe new life into the two-state solution.” He emphasized that progress toward such a solution must begin with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli prisoners taken on October 7, 2023.

The announcement follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s declaration on Friday that he intends to formally recognize Palestine during his upcoming visit to New York on Monday.

This wave of recognitions underscores mounting international momentum behind Palestinian statehood at a time of protracted conflict in Gaza and growing concerns over the viability of a two-state solution.
