Kallas: Re-imposition of UN sanctions on Iran 'not end of diplomacy'

Tehran - BORNA - In a statement, Kallas stressed that Iranian nuclear file remains a fundamental challenge to regional and international security, noting that “a sustainable solution to this issue can only be achieved through negotiation and diplomacy”.

The statement, issued on behalf of the EU, said that this decision came following the activation of the snapback mechanism by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, which had notified the UN Security Council on August 28 of Iran’s significant non-compliance with its commitments under the nuclear deal, KUNA news agency reported. 

Kallas affirmed that the EU would now proceed to implement the re-imposition of all previously lifted UN and EU nuclear-related sanctions without delay.

She pointed out that, over the past ten years, the Joint Comprehensive Plan o Action (JCPoA) and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 had provided a framework to ensure that Iran’s nuclear program remained exclusively peaceful, while also establishing an effective monitoring and verification mechanism through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
