Araghchi: Revival of terminated UN Security Council resolutions has no legal validity
Tehran - BORNA - Araghchi — who is in Uganda to attend the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) — addressed the plenary session of the conference on Wednesday morning, outlining Iran’s positions on key international issues.
Upholding NAM principles and countering unilateralism
In his remarks, Araghchi emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the fundamental principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, particularly the right of nations to self-determination, adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, rejection of the use of force, and condemnation of unilateral coercive measures.
He called for greater solidarity and unity among developing countries to confront the growing challenges and threats stemming from unilateralism and the hegemonic ambitions of certain powers.
Condemnation of U.S. and Israeli aggression
The Iranian Foreign Minister referred to the criminal aggression by Israel and the United States against Iran in June, describing it as a manifest violation of international law and a clear act of rogue behavior by both regimes.
He warned that the continuation of such threats poses a serious danger to international peace and security.
Illegal attempt to restore revoked UN resolutions
Araghchi denounced the recent efforts by the three European countries to misuse the dispute resolution mechanism of the JCPOA and the UN Security Council in order to revive resolutions that were terminated in 2015 under the nuclear agreement.
He stressed that this move — opposed by several Security Council members, including two permanent ones — is unlawful and carries no legal consequences.
The Minister recalled that UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the JCPOA, will reach its expiration on October 17, 2025, and urged NAM member states to resist the abuse of international institutions, especially the Security Council, for purposes of political blackmail and pressure against developing nations.
Araghchi added that given the lack of legal standing of the three European countries to invoke the dispute mechanism, their demonstrated bad faith, and the explicit opposition of two permanent Security Council members,
“The claim by the United States and the three European countries that the Security Council resolutions terminated in 2015 under the JCPOA have been reinstated is null and void, and must not be recognized by any state as legally effective.”
On Palestine: occupation is the root cause
Araghchi described the Palestinian question as one of the most pressing international issues, asserting that a genuine solution is impossible without addressing its root cause — occupation and the denial of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
He reaffirmed the legitimate right of the Palestinian nation to continue its struggle for self-determination, and reminded all governments of their responsibilities in this regard.
He reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran supports every effort aimed at ending the genocide of Palestinians, ensuring the withdrawal of occupying forces from Gaza, facilitating unhindered humanitarian aid delivery, and advancing the reconstruction of Gaza.
Araghchi also underlined the need to end the impunity of the Israeli regime and to prosecute and punish its war criminals.
Solidarity with nations under U.S. coercive measures
In another part of his speech, Araghchi highlighted the importance of solidarity and mutual support among NAM members targeted by the United States’ unilateral and coercive actions, including Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Belarus, and Iran.
He reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to strengthening cooperation among countries facing such unlawful pressures and sanctions.
