Ulyanov: Iran Itself Will Decide the Future of Its Nuclear Program
A senior Russian official emphasized that the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran themselves will decide the future and development of their country's nuclear program.

Tehran - BORNA - Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, stated today (Sunday): "There are no restrictions on this matter (nuclear activity), provided that such activities are carried out exclusively for peaceful purposes and are under the effective supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

Speaking with the RIA Novosti news agency, and in response to a question about whether Tehran might take further steps in developing its nuclear program given the expiration of formal restrictions, he clarified: "It is not yet clear whether Iran will take further steps in the development of its nuclear program. This matter will be determined by the Iranian authorities themselves."

Ulyanov continued: "In principle, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) does not provide for any stringent restrictions or prohibitions, provided that nuclear activities are carried out exclusively for peaceful purposes and are under the effective supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency."

The report notes that UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the document which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and established mechanisms for its international oversight, expired in October.
