Putin: Russia Will Be Forced to Take Countermeasures if US Conducts Nuclear Tests
Tehran - BORNA - Putin labeled the statements by US President Donald Trump regarding nuclear tests as a serious issue. He noted that the Russian Ambassador to the United States has sent a message to Washington seeking clarification on Trump's remarks about nuclear testing.
He added that the Russian Security Council has reviewed and analyzed the statements made by US governing officials concerning nuclear tests.
Putin emphasized that Russia has always fully adhered to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and continues to do so, with no plans to abandon its provisions.
The Russian President warned that if member states of the treaty decide to conduct nuclear tests, Russia would be forced to take appropriate reciprocal countermeasures.
Putin has instructed the Russian Security Council to collect information, conduct analyses, and present proposals regarding the potential commencement of preparations for nuclear tests.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, said on Wednesday that if the US proceeds with nuclear tests, Russia will also evaluate the possibility of conducting full-scale nuclear tests.
He stated that Trump himself may not know exactly what he means by nuclear tests, and warned that since Trump is the US President, such statements could have consequences.
