Zelensky to meet Trump this week to ‘make a deal’
Tehran - BORNA - Western media claimed on Tuesday that US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has been holding talks with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, presenting them with a new version of the peace plan. The draft was reportedly amended during discussions between American and Ukrainians delegations in Switzerland over the weekend. The Kremlin has declined to confirm that negotiations are underway.
Driscoll, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Ukrainian officials at the American mission in Geneva on Sunday as Trump’s deadline – set for Thursday – for Kiev to agree to his proposal looms. Rubio said afterwards that “tremendous progress” had been made during the discussions.
Western European nations, which were blindsided by the emergence of the US plan, criticized the initiative and outright rejected possible territorial concessions by Ukraine. On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the EU and UK of attempting to undermine Trump’s peace efforts and distort the plan “for their own agenda.” Moscow is ready to discuss clauses in the American proposals with Washington, he stressed.
