Pezeshkian: BRICS Can Offer New Communicational Model Based on Respect for Sovereignty
Tehran - BORNA - On Saturday evening, December 13, 2025, President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a meeting with Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Representatives, emphasized the Islamic Republic of Iran's interest in developing and deepening bilateral relations. He asserted that Iran is ready to expand its ties with Ethiopia in all possible areas, including economic, diplomatic, cultural, and security fields.
The President stated that achieving this goal requires the activation of the Joint Cooperation Commission, the precise enumeration of common interests, the identification of complementary capacities, and movement towards dialogue, agreement, and understanding based on mutual benefit. He noted that the purposeful use of existing institutional mechanisms could accelerate the process of cooperation between the two countries.
Referring to the joint membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Ethiopia in the BRICS organization, Pezeshkian described this multilateral framework as a valuable and strategic platform for expanding interactions, deepening economic and political ties, and countering unilateral approaches in the international system. He added: "BRICS can offer a new communicational model based on mutual respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the diverse cultures and civilizations of nations, paving the way for fair and balanced cooperation at the global level."
Pezeshkian noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to play a role in establishing and strengthening lasting peace and security with a responsible approach and the participation of all regional countries.
Stating that the approach and desire of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to create a world full of peace, security, and free from war, violence, and conflict, the President emphasized: "Our belief is that conscious individuals with deep human understanding neither seek war now nor will they in the future, and they prefer the path of dialogue and cooperation over confrontation."
Ethiopia Committed to Economic Ties and BRICS Capacity
In the meeting, Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the Ethiopian House of Representatives, expressed satisfaction with meeting the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He stressed his country's interest in developing and strengthening relations with Iran, especially in diplomatic, economic, and security areas, stating that the parliaments of both countries, by utilizing all their legal and supervisory capacities, will support the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and strive to facilitate increased diplomatic cooperation and deepen bilateral relations.
Referring to the importance of economic and commercial cooperation, the Ethiopian Speaker noted: "Ethiopia is determined to increase the level of economic exchanges, develop joint investments with Iran, and effectively utilize the capacities of the BRICS organization, including its New Development Bank, to strengthen the foundations of economic and financial cooperation."
Tagesse Chafo also pointed to the extensive cultural and civilizational commonalities between the two nations and considered the Islamic Republic of Iran's role in establishing and strengthening peace and security in West Asia to be significant. He concluded by saying that Ethiopia, like Iran, is striving to play a constructive and responsible role in the Horn of Africa, and the cooperation and synergy between the two countries in the field of peace and security can leave a positive and lasting impact on stability and tranquility in West Asia and the African continent.
