Araghchi Meets with Grossi in Geneva Amidst Nuclear Negotiations
Tehran - BORNA - Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Monday morning. Araghchi arrived in Geneva on Sunday at the head of a high-level delegation to conduct negotiations regarding the Iranian nuclear issue.
In a message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Araghchi detailed his diplomatic agenda in Geneva: "Joined by nuclear experts, I will meet Rafael Grossi for deep technical discussions. Also meeting Badr Albusaidi [Foreign Minister of Oman] ahead of diplomacy with U.S. on Tuesday."
The Foreign Minister further emphasized Tehran's constructive yet firm approach, stating: "I am in Geneva with real ideas to achieve a fair and equitable deal. What is not on the table: submission before threats."
The Geneva meetings follow indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran held in Muscat on February 6, mediated by Oman. Those discussions, which focused on defining "red lines" and outlining plans for nuclear negotiations and the lifting of sanctions, were described as "good" by both sides.
Despite the diplomatic movement, significant gaps remain. Washington has asserted that Iran’s missile program, domestic issues, and regional role must be addressed in any comprehensive settlement. Tehran, however, has consistently maintained that its defensive capabilities are non-negotiable and remains prepared to negotiate only on the nuclear file from a position of equality.
U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently deployed an additional carrier strike group and military hardware to West Asia, has stated his intention is to negotiate with Iran. However, in accordance with his dual-track "Peace Through Strength" doctrine, he has characterized the window for diplomacy as limited while simultaneously threatening military action.
Iranian officials have responded by stating they are prepared for all scenarios, while reiterating their commitment to a balanced and fair diplomatic resolution.
