Iran’s Mission in Vienna: IAEA Board Must Not Absolve Perpetrators of Attacks on Iranian Nuclear Facilities

Tehran - BORNA - In a post on its official X account addressing the agenda of the upcoming Board of Governors meeting, the Iranian mission wrote: "The Board of Governors meeting starting today will address critical issues."

Referring to the aggressive US-Zionist strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and power plants during the recent conflict, the mission stated: "The current situation regarding Iran's nuclear cooperation with the Agency is a direct result of 17 waves of unlawful military attacks by the US-Zionist regime against peaceful nuclear facilities under Iran's safeguards, coupled with continuous, serious threats. This matter is entirely unprecedented in the history of the IAEA."

The statement further emphasized: "Responsibility for internationally wrongful acts lies with the perpetrator and cannot be shifted to the victim. The Board of Governors must not become an instrument to absolve the perpetrators of these attacks from their responsibility. The Board needs to tread carefully on the path forward. Coercion and confrontation do not lead to cooperation; instead, they undermine the prospects for a diplomatic solution."

The remarks come ahead of the quarterly meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, scheduled from June 8 to June 12, which will discuss the implementation of the comprehensive safeguards agreement between the IAEA and Iran, UN Security Council resolutions, and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) safeguards agreement.

In recent days leading up to the session, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi repeated biased claims in the agency’s quarterly report regarding Iran’s compliance with its commitments. Without taking a clear legal stance on the recent aggressive attacks against nuclear facilities under Iran's safeguards agreement, the report reiterated concerns regarding the volume of Iran's 60% enriched uranium stockpiles and the agency's access to main nuclear sites.
