Baghaei: US, Israeli regime main drivers of UN system decay

Tehran - BORNA - Esmaeil Baghaei shared excerpts on X from UN Secretary-General António Guterres's speech at the Security Council meeting on July 23, 2026, which warned against the dangerous international trend of lawlessness, impunity, and conflict.

In his statement, Baghaei cited Guterres's remarks outlining an alarming disregard for international law, expanding impunity, unaddressed violations paving the way for further breaches, eroding trust, and growing difficulty in negotiating and maintaining understandings. He noted Guterres's observation that civilians pay a heavy price when military solutions are preferred over diplomacy—a reality fully evident in the Middle East as the region is drawn into a vicious cycle of conflict.

Responding to these points, Baghaei questioned why the Secretary-General abstained from speaking candidly or identifying the primary culprits, namely the United States and the Israeli regime. He urged Guterres to name those enabling absolute impunity for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression, emphasizing that action must be taken immediately to prevent the United Nations and its normative system from meeting the same fate as the League of Nations.
