Washington Post opinion editor resigns amid ongoing newsroom turmoil

Tehran - BORNA -  The Washington Post had achieved a relative calm in the five months since the major upheavals of last February, when nearly half of the newsroom was laid off and the publication's unpopular editor, William Lewis, abruptly resigned.

But now, staff at the media outlet have been stunned by the sudden resignation of Adam O'Neal, who was hired last year to lead the Op-ed section.

An Op-ed is published by a newspaper or magazine and expresses the views of a writer who is typically unaffiliated with the publication's editorial board.

In a memo to his colleagues in the Op-ed section titled "A wonderful year," O'Neal did not state a reason for his departure, saying only that he had decided to leave and that Aug. 31 would be his last day. Opinion staff had been given no indication that O'Neal was preparing to exit the publication.

In the memo, obtained by The Guardian, he wrote: "It was a wonderful year, and I am very proud of everything we have achieved together. Although this was not an easy decision, I leave this position with pride and am optimistic about its better days."

O'Neal referred in his note to newspaper owner Jeff Bezos's controversial decision last year to pivot the Op-ed section toward advocating for free markets and individual liberties—a move that upset many subscribers.

He wrote: "I joined The Washington Post to lead the Op-ed section at the dawn of a new chapter, and we have made significant changes over the past year. We quickly embraced our mission in support of free markets and individual liberties while placing the Post's opinion section on a sustainable footing."

The departure of a senior Washington Post executive after roughly a year is highly unusual, particularly for someone who served as the face of a fundamental shift in the section.

David Shipley, the former Op-ed editor and veteran journalist, previously resigned after failing to persuade Bezos to back down from his new mission for the section. This rendered the work of many other veteran writers meaningless, prompting many of them to leave the publication with severance packages in the summer of 2025.
