Iran condemns US killing of family in Qeshm as 'American human rights' in action
Tehran - BORNA - While condemning the attack the headquarters said the attack on a residential home in the Chah-Tangu neighborhood of Qeshm resulted in the martyrdom of three family members and the injury of two children.
The statement said that deliberate or reckless attacks on residential areas and civilian sites constitute a clear violation of peremptory norms of international law and international humanitarian law. Under the principle of distinction, reflected in Article 48 of the 1977 Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, parties to a conflict must distinguish between military objectives and civilians and civilian property. Articles 51 and 52 of the same protocol prohibit attacks against civilians and civilian objects, and any indiscriminate or disproportionate attack resulting in civilian casualties constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
The headquarters also cited the fundamental right to life, recognized in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which requires states to prevent arbitrary deprivation of life. The killing of a family in their home is a clear violation of this fundamental right and a disregard for human dignity.
The headquarters said the attack on residential homes and the killing of civilians, especially women and children, is a clear example of "American human rights" — an approach in which claims of defending human rights are replaced by the use of force, civilian killings, and violations of fundamental international law principles.
It criticized the silence, passivity, and double standards of many UN human rights mechanisms in the face of such crimes, warning that this selective and politicized approach allows impunity and the repetition of crimes.
The headquarters called on the UN Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and relevant special rapporteurs to move beyond passive positions and double standards and take practical action to hold the aggressor accountable, end impunity, compensate victims, and prevent further attacks. It stressed that deliberate attacks on civilian areas entail international responsibility, and that the international community must not allow fundamental international law principles to be sacrificed for political considerations.
