Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will travel to the holy city of Najaf on Wednesday to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage, a day before millions of Shia Muslims worldwide mark the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein.

Tehran - BORNA - Araghchi will be received by the governor of Najaf province upon his arrival. The visit comes as part of Iran's coordination with Iraqi officials on arrangements for the pilgrimage and related services for Iranian pilgrims.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the world's largest peaceful gatherings, draws tens of millions of participants annually who walk approximately 80 kilometers from Najaf to Karbala, commemorating the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his companions in the battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

During previous Arbaeen visits, Araghchi has inspected service convoys and Red Crescent relief teams along the Najaf-Karbala route, visiting roadside tents offering services to pilgrims. He is expected to meet with officials of the holy shrines during his stay.
