Six Iranian universities among world's top 1,000 in Shanghai Ranking 2026

The latest Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2026 has placed six Iranian universities among the world's top 1,000 institutions, with Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the University of Tehran jointly securing the highest position among Iranian universities.

Tehran - BORNA - According to the Shanghai Ranking 2026, which was released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology retained the top three positions globally, as in previous years.

Among Iranian institutions, Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the University of Tehran are both ranked in the 501-600 bracket, making them the top-ranked universities in the country. Amirkabir University of Technology is placed in the 801-900 range, while Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Sharif University of Technology, and Tarbiat Modares University are ranked in the 901-1,000 bracket.

Iran's first appearance in the Shanghai Ranking was in 2009, when only the University of Tehran was listed. The number of Iranian universities in the ranking has since grown, with six institutions currently represented.

The ranking also includes 55 universities from 10 Islamic countries. Saudi Arabia and Turkey lead with 14 universities each, followed by Iran and Egypt with six each. King Saud University from Saudi Arabia achieved the highest rank among Islamic countries, placed in the 101-150 bracket.

In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking, four Iranian universities were listed, including the University of Tehran (401-500), Tehran University of Medical Sciences (501-600), and Sharif University of Technology (601-700), with Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Amirkabir University of Technology also appearing in lower brackets. The 2026 results show an improvement, with the University of Tehran improving to 501-600 from 401-500, while Amirkabir University of Technology appears at 801-900 from the 901-1,000 bracket.

The Shanghai Ranking evaluates universities based on several indicators, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, and papers indexed in major citation indexes.
