Anwar Ibrahim: Iran’s resolve in defending its positions is commendable
Tehran - BORNA - In an interview with Al Jazeera English on Tuesday, Anwar said Malaysia was among the few countries that had openly condemned the US and Israeli military attacks on Iran.
“Iran’s resilience and determination in standing by its positions are commendable,” he said.
The Malaysian prime minister also stressed the importance of regional engagement, saying Malaysia preferred to maintain dialogue with its neighbors.
He said Iran should likewise engage with neighboring countries and take their concerns into consideration.
Anwar also referred to a resolution adopted by the Malaysian Parliament condemning the military aggression against Iran, saying Kuala Lumpur had gone further than many other countries in taking a clear position on the issue.
He also criticized what he called “Western hypocrisy,” saying he had raised the issue even in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Addressing the Israeli regime’s actions in Gaza, Anwar said, “Do not talk about Gaza today. They have been there for the past 70 years. And now you expect an emerging country like Malaysia to resolve a problem that has existed for 70 years.”
In another part of the interview, Anwar addressed the issue of China and Taiwan.
“I consider Taiwan part of China. That’s it,” he said. “We may have disagreements and there may be some excesses, yes, but I am expressing my view. There is one China, and that is accepted by everyone.”
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry later responded to Anwar’s remarks, saying that as Malaysia is a democratic country and Anwar has long presented himself as an advocate of democracy and human rights, he should uphold principles including freedom, human rights and the rule of law, while respecting and supporting the will of the people.
The ministry also said Anwar’s remarks that Taiwan is part of China threatened regional peace and stability and could undermine the confidence of Taiwanese businesses in investing in Malaysia.
