Iran women beat Chinese Taipei, make history in Asian Championship opener

Iran’s women’s national volleyball team opened its 2026 Asian Championship campaign with a 3-1 victory over Chinese Taipei on Friday, reaching the 100-point mark in the world rankings for the first time in its history.

Tehran - BORNA - Iran, coached by Alireza Toloukian, lost the opening set 25-16 but bounced back to win the next three sets 27-25, 25-19 and 25-14.

The victory earned Iran 8.87 points in the FIVB world rankings, taking its total to 104.47 points and lifting the team to 41st place in the world.

It marked the first time Iran’s women’s national team has surpassed the 100-point threshold in the world rankings.

Elaheh Pour Saleh was the match’s top scorer with 25 points.

Iran will face China in its second match of the tournament at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 24.

The 2026 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship began in China on Friday.
