Iran's deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy said even foreign media assessments have concluded that Washington's new sanctions cannot achieve the impact American officials claim.

Tehran - BORNA - Hamid Ghanbari said that if the goal of the sanctions is to force a change in Iran's policies, or to pressure the country into abandoning policies rooted in its laws and the will of its people, that will not happen.

Ghanbari said that since virtually all major sectors of Iran's economy have already been under sanctions, the new measures are unlikely to target any new sector previously unaffected. He said the US focus is instead on making existing sanctions more effective, closing off circumvention routes and countering methods used to work around them.

He also pointed to heavy media pressure aimed at exaggerating the impact of sanctions, saying this is another area requiring full vigilance.
