China calls for lifting US sanctions related to Iran
Tehran - BORNA - Responding to US sanctions against Iran on Thursday, the ministry urged Washington to immediately correct what it called its wrongful practices.
According to Al Mayadeen, the ministry also called on the US administration to remove sanctions imposed on Chinese companies and nationals.
China had previously warned that the expansion of US sanctions against entities and individuals linked to Iran, including some based in China, should not disrupt or undermine Beijing’s cooperation with Tehran.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that cooperation between China and Iran is in line with international law and said Beijing would “firmly safeguard its interests” in the face of the sanctions.
China is one of Iran’s largest trading partners and purchases a significant share of the country’s oil exports.
The remarks came after the US Treasury Department announced sanctions in August against nearly 60 Iran-linked entities, including several in China, as part of Washington’s efforts to intensify economic pressure on Tehran and target countries that continue to support it.
Huang Ling, another spokesperson for China’s Commerce Ministry, also responded to recent remarks by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent concerning Beijing.
Huang said the remarks were merely a pretext for protectionism and for exerting pressure on and restricting China.
“This will only damage the global economic and trade order and undermine the healthy development of the world economy,” the spokesperson said.
Huang also expressed Beijing’s strong opposition to using multilateral platforms such as the G20 to push what China called “economic disruptions” and accusations of “overcapacity.”
The spokesperson called on all countries to uphold multilateralism, strengthen communication and policy coordination, expand openness and cooperation, and work together to maintain the stability and smooth functioning of global industrial and supply chains while pursuing mutually beneficial outcomes.
