Baghaei to Bessent: History extends far beyond your childhood backyard

Tehran - BORNA - Baghaei made the remarks in a post on X marking the anniversary of the martyrdom of Rais Ali Delvari and Iran’s National Day of Resistance against Colonialism.

“Today, Sept. 3, marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Rais Ali Delvari and the National Day of Struggle against British Colonialism — a man who, more than a century ago, stood against the army of the British Empire on these very southern shores,” Baghaei wrote.

“Rais Ali was martyred, but resistance and steadfastness continued.”

Baghaei then addressed Bessent, referring to recent remarks in which the US Treasury secretary invoked childhood memories of a backyard in South Carolina and killing venomous snakes with a machete and a rake to explain his view of Iran.

“Indeed, this is precisely Bessent’s problem: he has mistaken the depth of Iran’s history and civilization and the richness of its culture for the size of his childhood backyard,” Baghaei said.

He recalled Britain’s military campaign in Bushehr and Tangestan more than a century ago, saying that despite Delvari’s killing, resistance continued with greater force.

“Your unlawful ‘war of choice’ was also supposed to bring the Iranian nation to collapse through maximum brutality, but what has collapsed more than anything else is your illusion of absolute power and all the moral credibility you claimed to possess,” he wrote.

“History is far broader than the memories of a child and his backyard, and its judgment of those who still see themselves as heroes of their backyard, armed with a machete and a rake, is clear,” Baghaei added.
