US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy after posting images of the Moon and suggesting that Earth’s natural satellite belongs to the United States.

Tehran - BORNA - According to The Economic Times, Trump made the remarks in a post on Sunday, drawing renewed attention to his unconventional statements concerning geography and territorial naming.

The controversy comes as New Mexico has also become a new target of Trump’s renaming proposals. He suggested changing the state’s name to “New America,” prompting a sharp response from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

“This name is not up for debate. This land has been ours since before the United States even existed,” Grisham told Fox News.

The governor also said Trump was raising such issues in an attempt to divert Americans’ attention from more immediate problems, including sharply rising gasoline prices.

Trump had previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” on his first day back in the White House in 2025, a move opposed by Mexico. Canada has also rejected US efforts to rename Lake Ontario.

Trump’s repeated statements about renaming geographical locations, now coupled with his claim over the Moon, have fueled further criticism of his approach to geography and foreign policy.
