Iran summons Swedish envoy, orders diplomat to leave within 48 hours

Tehran - BORNA -  In an official statement, the ministry categorically dismissed Stockholm’s claims of Iranian interference in Sweden’s internal security as baseless, strongly condemning the Swedish government's decision to halt the diplomatic mission of an Iranian envoy stationed in Stockholm.

The ministry described Sweden's measure as unjustified and in violation of international law, attributing the decision to the influence of the Zionist regime aimed at disrupting the routine functions of the Iranian embassy.

Highlighting Sweden’s obligations under international law, particularly the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the statement warned that obstructing diplomatic missions entails international responsibility and affirmed Tehran’s right to adopt reciprocal countermeasures to protect its national interests.

Consequently, Alireza Yousefi, the Director General for Western Europe at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, summoned the Swedish ambassador on Thursday morning to lodge a formal protest against Sweden’s destructive policies, hostile rhetoric, and its hosting of anti-Iran terrorist groups.

During the meeting, while rejecting Sweden’s allegations, the Iranian official formally notified the ambassador that a Swedish diplomat in Tehran must leave the country within 48 hours based on clear reasons outlined to the envoy.
