Iran ready to reopen Hormuz within seven days if US eases military pressure, Kyodo reports

Tehran - BORNA - Citing a senior Iranian source, Kyodo claimed the proposal was conveyed to Washington through mediators and includes the resumption of negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to permanently end hostilities between the two countries.

According to Kyodo, Tehran intends to use the UN General Assembly session in New York to hold consultations with countries acting as mediators.

The Iranian source ruled out a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the session, but said the possibility of moving toward an agreement remains.

"There is a possibility of moving toward an agreement," the official said, adding that Washington must demonstrate "seriousness and commitment" for diplomacy to advance.

The official told Kyodo that Tehran is looking for signals that the United States is ready to return to negotiations and to take steps toward ending the military blockade of Iranian ports and halting military operations related to the Strait of Hormuz. If such steps are taken, the official said, Iran would be prepared to reopen the strategic waterway within seven days and return to the negotiating table.

Separately, according to Al Arabiya, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran would welcome a revival of the diplomatic process if the United States takes "concrete steps."

The official also said the Iranian delegation in New York has "full authority" to hold consultations on reviving diplomacy with the United States, adding that the terms of an agreement to end hostilities between Tehran and Washington could be discussed in New York through mediators.
