Tehran awaits mediator response following Trump remarks on Hormuz plan: Araghchi
Tehran - BORNA - Speaking to correspondents on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Araghchi emphasized that there is no alternative to resolving the standoff with Washington other than a fair, negotiated settlement that guarantees the rights of the Iranian people and fulfills their legitimate demands.
"We noted the initial reaction from the US president, but nothing formal has yet been delivered to us through the mediators," Araghchi said. "The US president has made numerous contradictory statements, which has regrettably become standard. We are waiting for the final stances to be transmitted by the intermediaries, and we will make our decisions accordingly."
Araghchi reiterated that any progress toward reopening the strategic waterway remains strictly conditional on the fulfillment of terms established by Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), stressing that Tehran will not back down from these prerequisites.
Reviewing Iran’s diplomatic engagements at the UN summit, the foreign minister noted that the Iranian delegation maintained an active presence, with President Masoud Pezeshkian holding extensive bilateral talks and international media interviews before departing for Tehran.
"In all our meetings, including consultations with mediators, our primary focus was articulating and defending the conditions set by the Supreme National Security Council for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and advancing negotiations," Araghchi said, noting that mediators have relayed these terms to the American side.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran retains the political high ground on the international stage, having consistently pursued diplomatic avenues while firmly defending its sovereign rights. "No one in the world can accuse the Islamic Republic of Iran of failing to explore the path of diplomacy," he stated, adding that whenever adversaries chose confrontation, Iran stood resolutely against them.
