Iran central bank chief at IMF: Claims of Iran's economic collapse are an illusion
Tehran - BORNA - Speaking at the International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok, Hemmati said: "Despite all this pressure, Iran's economy has shown very good resilience, and the claim of the collapse of Iran's economy is nothing but an illusion."
Central bank priorities
Hemmati said the Central Bank's priorities are curbing inflation, stabilizing inflationary expectations, maintaining financial stability, and continuing banking and payment system services.
He said the Central Bank, despite US economic pressure and sanctions, has played an important role in maintaining economic stability by securing foreign currency for the country's essential needs and medicine, and by curbing the pace of inflation.
"We are committed to monetary discipline, strengthening policy frameworks and addressing macroeconomic imbalances, and these efforts must be assessed taking into account external shocks and financial constraints that limit the policy space and the effectiveness of policies," he said.
Regional situation and the IMF's role
Hemmati said the continuation of the regional situation is affecting energy markets, transportation, trade and investment, adding that stability requires respect for sovereignty and legitimate security concerns, along with cooperation based on mutual responsibility and shared interests.
He said these developments demand a "clearer and more active response" from the IMF, in line with its mandate to strengthen international monetary cooperation and oversee the effective operation of the international monetary system.
"We expect the Fund, in its bilateral and multilateral surveillance activities, to examine the economic effects of war, sanctions and international payment restrictions with the same precision with which it evaluates domestic policies," Hemmati said, adding that this responsibility requires analysis with equal standards for all members and active dialogue among members on the measures needed to reduce these effects.
