Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Payam Ahmadi has decisively defeated his opponents to secure a spot in the 55kg final of the World Championships in Kazakhstan.

Tehran - BORNA - During the opening day of the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships featuring the first four weight classes, Ahmadi, who holds a world silver medal, faced host nation representative Iskhar Kurbayev in the 55kg semifinals. The Iranian wrestler overpowered his Kazakh rival with a commanding 7-1 victory to advance to the final. He will wrestle Azerbaijan's Eldaniz Azizli for the gold medal on Sunday.

Following a bye in the first round, Ahmadi started his campaign by thrashing Max Nowry of the United States 10-1. He then secured his semifinal spot by blanking India's Lalit 9-0 in the quarterfinals.

In the other semifinal match of the 55kg weight class, four-time world champion Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan—whose national team is currently led by renowned Iranian head coach Mohammad Bana—defeated Georgia's Vakhtang Lolua to reach the championship match.
