Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Gholamreza Farrokhi has clinched the gold medal in the 82kg weight class at the 2026 World Championships in Kazakhstan, defending his world title for the second consecutive year.

Tehran - BORNA - During the medal matches of the first four weight classes at the 2026 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships in Astana, Farrokhi, the 2025 world champion, faced Turkey's Yuksel Sari Cicek in the 82kg final. The Iranian grappler overpowered his rival with a 5-1 victory to secure Iran's first gold medal of the tournament.

Following a bye in the first round, Farrokhi started his campaign by defeating Hungary's world silver medalist Zoltan Levai 6-0 via fall. He then blanked Moldova's Mihail Bradu 9-0 to reach the semifinals, where he edged past Russia's Gadzhiyev 3-3 on criteria to book his ticket to the championship match.

Earlier in the day, Iranian wrestlers Payam Ahmadi (55kg) and Ali Ahmadi Vafa (60kg) settled for silver medals after falling short against their opponents from Azerbaijan and Japan, respectively, in their final bouts.

Ali Oskou, Iran's last representative in the first four weight classes, is scheduled to step onto the mat shortly to compete for the 77kg bronze medal.
