Russian heavyweight wrestler Abdulla Kurbanov has advanced to the 125kg final of the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships after defeating Azerbaijan’s Giorgi Meshvildishvili, ending a 13-year absence of Russian heavyweights from the world final.

Tehran - BORNA - Kurbanov broke Russia’s long-standing heavyweight drought by defeating Azerbaijan’s Giorgi Meshvildishvili in the semifinals of the 125kg category at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.

It marks the first time since 2013 that a Russian heavyweight has reached the final of the competition.

The last Russian wrestler to achieve the feat was Khadzhimurat Gatsalov, who went on to win the world gold medal in the 120kg category in 2013.

Kurbanov will now face Iran’s Amirhossein Zare, a three-time world champion and silver medalist at the Paris Olympics, in the heavyweight final.
