Iran has condemned as “unlawful, unjustified and provocative” the European attempt to restore United Nations sanctions under the so-called snapback mechanism.

Iran has expressed strong criticism of French President Emmanuel Macron for addressing an Israeli television channel to dismiss a “reasonable” proposal put forward by Tehran aimed at preventing the snapback of sanctions, and to declare the matter as a “done deal.”

Iran’s foreign minister told his European counterparts that Tehran has acted responsibly in its engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has drafted a clear framework on implementing its safeguards commitments. He stressed that it is now the turn of the European parties to seize this opportunity, preserve diplomacy, and prevent an avoidable crisis.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, along with the foreign ministers of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday, pressing Tehran to permit inspections of sensitive nuclear sites while omitting mention of its cooperation with the IAEA.

The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a telephone conversation will be held today between the Iranian Foreign Minister and the foreign ministers of the three European countries that are members of the JCPOA and the European Union's foreign policy officer.
