UNSC Fails to Adopt Resolution Extending Sanctions Relief for Iran
The UN Security Council has voted against extending international sanctions relief for Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Tehran - BORNA - The Security Council on Friday failed to adopt a draft resolution aimed at prolonging the suspension of UN sanctions against Iran. The move paves the way for the automatic return of sanctions by the end of this month.

In the vote, four countries supported the draft, nine opposed, and two abstained. The draft resolution had been introduced by South Korea, which holds the rotating presidency of the Council in September, and was intended to extend the suspension of sanctions under Resolution 2231.

Russia, China, Algeria, and Pakistan voted in favor, while France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia voted against. Guyana and South Korea abstained.

Meanwhile, the three European countries — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — on 28 August formally notified the Security Council of their decision to trigger the so-called “snapback mechanism” to restore sanctions on Iran. This action initiated a 30-day period to reach a diplomatic solution, which is now nearing its end.

If no agreement is reached by the end of this period, all UN sanctions against Iran will automatically be reinstated without the need for another vote.

Iran has condemned the European step as unlawful, stressing that it will respond accordingly and is prepared for all scenarios.
