Iran Greco-Roman Wrestling Team Crowned Asian Champions
Tehran - BORNA - Iran’s national Greco-Roman wrestling team secured an early overall title at the 2026 Asian Championships in Kyrgyzstan following a dominant performance in the first five weight categories, where Iranian athletes clinched one gold, three silver, and one bronze medal.
With the results from the first day and the high probability of securing three more gold and two bronze medals in the remaining five weights, the Iranian squad has mathematically surpassed its competitors to claim the championship trophy ahead of the final matches.
In the 130 kg category, Amin Mirzazadeh delivered a flawless performance to secure the gold medal. After a first-round bye, Mirzazadeh defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Roman Kim 9-0 and South Korea’s Kim Min-seok 8-0 to reach the final. In the gold-medal bout, he overwhelmed Raphael Tsitsuashvili of Uzbekistan with another 9-0 victory, finishing the tournament without conceding a single point.
In the 63 kg and 77 kg divisions, Erfan Jarkani and Ali Oskou both earned silver medals. Jarkani reached the final after defeating opponents from South Korea and Uzbekistan but fell 7-2 to Kyrgyzstan’s Aftandil Talaibek Uulu. Meanwhile, Oskou lost a closely contested 3-3 criteria decision in the final against world champion and Olympic medalist Akzhol Makhmudov of Kyrgyzstan.
The 87 kg category saw world gold medalist Gholamreza Farrokhi take the silver after a string of technical fall victories earlier in the day. Despite his strong start, Farrokhi suffered an unexpected 11-4 defeat in the final against Kyrgyzstan’s Asan Zhanyshov. In the 55 kg category, Mohammad Hosseinvand Panahi rounded out the day’s medal count by defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Ulan Muratbek Uulu 7-1 to claim the bronze.
The final individual standings for the first five weights confirmed Iran's dominance, with Amin Mirzazadeh taking top honors in the heavyweight division, while the host nation, Kyrgyzstan, secured three gold medals in the lighter and middleweight classes.
