Iranian Ambassador Meets Shehbaz Sharif Over Regional Situation
Tehran - BORNA - The Government of Pakistan stated in a post on its official X account: "Ambassador Reza Amiri-Moghaddam of Iran met today with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the existing situation in the region and efforts to restore peace." The meeting was also attended by Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and several other senior officials.
This meeting follows the continuation of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which was set to expire early this morning. Earlier today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire while maintaining the naval blockade of Iran, stating the pause would continue until Iran responds to the U.S. proposal.
Following Trump's announcement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his gratitude for the extension and the persistence of diplomatic efforts. In a message on X, Sharif stated: "With the prevailing trust and confidence, Pakistan will continue its serious efforts to resolve the conflict through negotiations." He added: "I sincerely hope both sides continue to observe the ceasefire and reach a comprehensive peace agreement in the planned second round of Islamabad talks to permanently end the conflict."
In this context, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei issued an official reaction today. While appreciating Pakistan’s mediatory efforts toward ending the imposed war and establishing regional peace, Baghaei noted: "The Islamic Republic of Iran was not the initiator of this imposed war, and Iran's actions have all been carried out in line with the inherent right to legitimate defense against the military aggression of the United States and the Zionist regime."
He further added: "Accordingly, while closely monitoring developments in both field and political arenas, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take necessary and appropriate measures to safeguard its national interests and security. The Armed Forces remain fully vigilant and prepared for a comprehensive and decisive defense of Iran’s sovereignty against any threat or mischief."
