Crucial Qualification Clash in Amman: Eight Decisive Days for Iran’s Basketball National Team

Tehran - BORNA -  Window 3 of the qualifiers is scheduled to take place from June 25 to July 5. Under the guidance of head coach Vassilis Manolopoulos, the Iranian squad will kick off their campaign today, Monday, June 29, at 17:00 Tehran time. They will face Syria in a postponed Week 2 fixture that was initially cancelled due to the outbreak of the war. Following this opening match, Iran will continue its critical run by facing Jordan on July 2 and Syria once again on July 5. Due to regional circumstances, Jordan will serve as the neutral host for all of these fixtures.

Competing in Group C alongside Jordan, Syria, and Iraq, the Iranian team has so far recorded two commanding victories against Iraq (94-68 and 86-71) and suffered a single defeat against Jordan (60-73) by the end of Window 2. In the current group standings, Jordan leads with 6 points, followed closely by Iran in second place with 5 points, while Syria and Iraq occupy the subsequent positions with 4 and 3 points, respectively. In the other qualifying groups, Australia (Group A), Japan (Group B), and Lebanon (Group D) currently hold the top spots.

According to FIBA regulations, the top three teams from each group will advance to the Second Round, where they will be divided into two groups of six. All points accumulated during the first round will carry over to the next stage. In the Second Round, each team will play home-and-away fixtures against their newly drawn opponents. Ultimately, the top three teams from each group, along with the best fourth-placed team from Asia and Oceania, will secure their spots at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.
