Iran, Oman advance technical talks on safe Hormuz transit corridor, spokesman says

Tehran - BORNA - Responding to inquiries from reporters regarding recent regional and Western media reports, Baghaei confirmed that discussions between Tehran and Muscat—as the two littoral states of the Strait of Hormuz—have been actively underway over the past two months.

"The technical, legal, security, and environmental aspects of this initiative have been thoroughly examined by competent authorities within our country," Baghaei stated, describing the negotiation process between the two nations as "professional" and "forward-moving."

"The geographical coordinates of the proposed maritime route have been agreed upon by both sides," Baghaei noted. "Provided that certain third parties do not obstruct the process, a joint statement detailing the primary considerations and key agreed-upon points is currently undergoing final review and drafting."

Addressing the potential impact of the bilateral understanding on overall maritime safety in the strategic waterway, Baghaei cautioned that the agreement alone cannot guarantee full security for passing vessels as long as underlying aggressive actions persist.

"The closure of the Strait of Hormuz stemmed from the military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran, alongside its subsequent security ramifications for the entire region," Baghaei clarified. "Naturally, an agreement between Iran and Oman cannot, in and of itself, render the strait completely secure for transiting ships, as the destabilizing factors introduced by the United States—particularly the naval blockade and other aggressive and threatening actions against Iran and its interests—remain in place."

In response to a separate question regarding prospective travel by senior Iranian officials to regional capitals by the end of the week, Baghaei confirmed that no visits by the Foreign Minister or the Speaker of Parliament to Pakistan or Qatar are currently scheduled. He added, however, that Islamabad and Doha continue their diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate regional tensions, with Tehran maintaining active consultation and contact with both nations.
