Iran, Oman announce temporary joint shipping corridor through Strait of Hormuz

Tehran - BORNA - The statement followed a working visit to Iran by Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi, who held what the two sides described as constructive consultations with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

“The consultations focused on the importance both countries attach to the resumption of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while preserving their sovereignty and sovereign rights,” the statement said.

The two ministers discussed a phased framework aimed at providing a practical and implementable basis for moving forward, taking into account the current situation in the strait resulting from the recent war and its catastrophic consequences.

“The proposed framework includes the establishment of a temporary joint shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and an agreement to implement a joint project to clear the strait of mines,” the statement said.

Technical negotiations between the two sides will continue with the aim of reaching an agreement on a permanent shipping corridor and the future management of the strait, as well as establishing a mechanism for information exchange, traffic management and the provision of related maritime and security services.

In this regard, Iran and Oman stressed the importance of holding joint consultations with regional countries bordering the waters of the Persian Gulf.

The two sides also emphasized the need to comply with applicable international law and respect the sovereign rights of coastal states.
