Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has called on members of the country’s women’s national football team to return home, condemning what he described as a deceptive media campaign by the United States and Australia aimed at pressuring the players to seek political asylum.

Tehran - BORNA - Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, reacted to what he called a misleading media and propaganda campaign by the United States and Australia intended to frighten members of Iran’s women’s national football team and push them to apply for political asylum in Australia.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Baghaei wrote: “They killed 170 of our innocent elementary school girls in a two-stage attack using Tomahawk missiles in the city of Minab, and now they are trying to take our female athletes hostage under the name of ‘saving them.’ What hypocrisy and shamelessness!”

He added: “To the dear women of our homeland in the national women’s football team: Iran is waiting for you with open arms. Do not worry. Return home.”
