Iraq's ambassador to Russia said that Baghdad is ready to host negotiations between Iran and the United States if necessary.

Tehran - BORNA - Abdulkarim Hashim Mustafa, Iraq's ambassador to Russia, said: "In 2014, Iraq hosted the first indirect talks between the United States and Iran. Iraq is always ready to play this role, but this depends on the will and desire of the two partners, the United States and Iran."

According to TASS news agency, he also noted that many Israeli missiles were launched toward Iran not only from Iraqi airspace, but also from Syria, Lebanon, and sometimes Jordan, adding that few countries technically have the capability to intercept these missiles.

The senior Iraqi diplomat also commented on the situation in Lebanon, stating that Iraq opposes Israel's aggression against Lebanon.

He said: "Iraq's position has always been clear that we oppose the occupation of Palestinian territories, Lebanese territories, and Israel's aggression against Lebanon."

This comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon in Washington, announced an agreement on Lebanon following five rounds of negotiations on June 26.

Under this agreement, Israeli forces will initially hand over control of two areas in the south and north of the Litani River to the Lebanese army.
