Millions Gather in Tehran as Funeral Prayers Are Performed for Iran’s Martyred Leader and Family

Tehran - BORNA - The massive public farewell for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, which began on Saturday, continued with millions of citizens from across Iran gathering at the Imam Khomeini Grand Musalla in Tehran. Grand Ayatollah Ja'far Subhani officially led the special funeral prayers (Namaz-e-Mayyit) on Sunday morning, surrounded by a vast sea of mourners overflowing into all adjacent highways and avenues.

Due to the exceptional significance of the occasion, the funeral prayers were performed in three separate segments: first over the body of the late Leader, followed by prayers over the bodies of his daughters and relatives, including Seyedeh Bushra Hosseini Khamenei, Dr. Mesbahal-Hoda Bagheri Kani, and Zahra Hadad-Adel. The final prayer was held for Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani, the granddaughter of the late leader.

As the prayers commenced, the three sons of the martyred Leader—Hujjat al-Islam Seyed Mostafa, Seyed Masoud, and Seyed Meysam Khamenei—formed the front row of the congregation alongside the heads of Iran’s executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as senior military and political officials.

The atmosphere inside the Grand Musalla was intensely emotional, with mourners carrying national flags and chanting slogans demanding strategic justice against the American and Zionist perpetrators. Prior to the morning prayers, the congregation stood to sing the national anthem, emphasizing unwavering national solidarity. Following the prayers, the bodies of the martyrs were placed on a designated state platform to allow the general public to pay their final respects.

Media coordinators confirmed that 14,000 domestic journalists and nearly 900 foreign media correspondents covered the historic event. Several international journalists expressed astonishment at the sheer scale of the turnout and the deep public devotion displayed throughout the capital. Comprehensive medical, logistics, and security measures ensured the orderly movement of the massive crowds.

The extensive public farewell follows a state memorial service held on Friday, where high-level diplomatic delegations from dozens of nations arrived in Tehran to pay official tribute. The state funeral honors Grand Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, who was martyred on February 28, 2026, during the military strikes launched by the United States and the Zionist regime against the Islamic Republic.
