Iran’s men’s sitting volleyball team crowned world champions

Tehran - BORNA - During the final match of the tournament held in Hangzhou, China, the Iranian squad secured a 3-1 victory over their long-standing rivals, securing another gold medal and booking their ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

Iran dominated the first, second, and fourth sets with scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-16, respectively, while dropping the third set to Bosnia 25-20.

The world championship squad representing Iran in Hangzhou included: Meisam Hajibabaei, Sadegh Bigdeli, Hamidreza Abbasi, Mehdi Babadi, Ali Akbari, Davoud Alipourian, Hossein Golestani, Masoud Emami, Mohammad Nemati, Jamal Nazari, Meisam Alipour, and Morteza Mehrzad.

With this latest victory, Iran's men's national team cements its status as the most decorated sitting volleyball team in history, boasting a record of nine gold medals, one silver, and two bronze in the world championships. Bosnia and Herzegovina follows in second place with three gold, four silver, and one bronze medals.

Additionally, Iran holds a dominant record in the Paralympic Games, having captured eight gold titles across past editions.

At the conclusion of the tournament, individual honors were awarded to prominent Iranian figures. Davoud Alipourian, the captain of Iran’s national team, was named the best Asian player of the past 30 years.

Furthermore, Ebrahim Firouzi, an international referee from Iran, was recognized as the best referee in Asia.
