'The Odyssey' sales hit $639 million despite piracy leak on social media

Tehran - BORNA - Universal Pictures confirmed it has initiated takedown protocols after unauthorized copies of the film appeared online. The studio said in a statement: "We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols. We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."

A low-quality version of the film was posted on X on Sunday but was removed roughly two hours later after garnering nearly 50,000 views. A reportedly higher-quality version also circulated on the platform, collecting millions of views and thousands of reposts before the account was suspended.

The film earned $87 million in North America in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $286 million. Internationally, it has collected over $353 million, pushing global earnings to $639.6 million. The film's second-weekend performance surpassed the opening weekend of Nolan's "Oppenheimer," which earned $82 million in its first three days.

Premium large-format screens have played a major role in the film's performance, with IMAX contributing $48 million to the global earnings this weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, has been known to be difficult to work with on takedown requests. Universal said it is pursuing all appropriate remedies to protect its intellectual property.
