Iran's Human Rights Headquarters: Ukraine's attack on Iranian vessel violates humanitarian law
Tehran - BORNA - The headquarters said the attack was illegal and contrary to fundamental principles of international law, violating the basic right to life. Targeting a commercial vessel and endangering civilian lives was an unjustifiable act with severe human consequences.
The statement emphasized that the right to life, as one of the most fundamental human rights, must not be sacrificed for political, military, or state conflict objectives. Any intentional or irresponsible action endangering civilians involved in maritime transport warrants serious condemnation and accountability.
Iran reiterated that it has had no involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and has consistently stressed the importance of dialogue and adherence to international law. The attack on Iran's commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea is a dangerous attempt to expand the scope of conflict and threatens regional and international peace and security.
The headquarters called on the UN Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the UN Secretary-General, and all states and international bodies to condemn the attack without selective approaches. It also expressed condolences to the victim's family and wished a swift recovery for the injured, urging international bodies to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
Silence in the face of such violations, the statement warned, would undermine international law and create impunity for human rights violators. Iran said it will pursue legal and international action against the perpetrators.
