Iran's Vienna embassy urges IAEA to return to Article 2 of its statute

Tehran - BORNA - In a post on X, the embassy marked the anniversary of the IAEA's statute entering into force on July 29, 1957, saying the occasion is an opportunity to reaffirm the agency's foundational mission.

Citing Article 2 of the statute, the embassy noted that the IAEA's mission is explicitly defined as "accelerating and enlarging the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world."

The embassy expressed concern that the agency has become overly focused on safeguards, allocating a major portion of its regular budget to this area, which has led to technical cooperation programs becoming dependent on extrabudgetary contributions. "This has caused a serious concern and has diverted the Agency from its core mission," the statement said.

Iran's embassy stressed that the only way to stop and reverse this trend is to ensure the full, balanced, non-discriminatory, and impartial implementation of the mission for which the agency was originally established, adding that this is vital for restoring and preserving the IAEA's credibility.
