Iran officially joined the Global Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) as a founding member on Friday following the signing of the organization's founding document.

Tehran - BORNA - Iran’s Ambassador to China, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, signed the founding document in Beijing on behalf of the Iranian government, registering Iran among the member states of the newly established international body.

Following the signing, Rahmani Fazli met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Bin, emphasizing the role of multilateral cooperation in shaping the future of advanced technologies.

"Iran is prepared to actively participate in the scientific, research, and practical development of artificial intelligence, as well as in creating international mechanisms for the equitable use of this technology," the ambassador stated.

He added that Iran's involvement as a founding member aligns with its approach of constructive engagement in emerging technologies and leveraging AI capabilities to foster sustainable development and societal progress.

WAICO was established on July 16, 2026, at China's initiative on the sidelines of the World AI Conference 2026 in Shanghai. Under its charter, WAICO operates as an independent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Shanghai, dedicated to advancing international AI cooperation, strengthening global tech governance, and ensuring safe, healthy, and equitable technology development.
