China, Russia oppose Western stance on Iran nuclear file at UN Security Council

Tehran - BORNA -  The Security Council approved its agenda to review Iran’s nuclear file following a procedural vote of 11 in favor, two against—cast by China and Russia—and two abstentions. The vote was strictly administrative to confirm the meeting's schedule and did not pertain to the draft resolution recently adopted at the IAEA Board of Governors.

Speaking at the session, China's representative voiced support for Russia's position, stating that insistence on returning sanctions against Iran jeopardizes international stability. The diplomat emphasized that the "snapback" mechanism under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has concluded, marking the sunset of the nuclear deal, while expressing regret over certain council members' continued push on the issue.

Mirroring Beijing's stance, Russia's representative reaffirmed Moscow's opposition to anti-Iran resolutions and agreed that the trigger mechanism is no longer valid. The Russian envoy stressed that such measures create unnecessary strain among UN member states and the Security Council while posing risks to global security.

The UN session follows the adoption of an anti-Iran resolution submitted by the United States and the European Troika (Britain, France, and Germany) regarding Tehran's peaceful nuclear activities during the IAEA Board of Governors meeting late Wednesday.
