Baghaei: Lamerd attack aimed at maximizing civilian casualties
Tehran - BORNA - Baghaei made the remarks on Saturday, 21 Shahrivar, during a visit to residential areas in Lamerd damaged by US and Israeli missile attacks.
"Lamerd was one of the areas attacked by the enemies on 9 Esfand last year," Baghaei told reporters. "The attack took place at 17:12 on 9 Esfand 1404 (February 28, 2026), and given the time chosen, our assessment is that the goal was to take the largest number of victims."
Referring to the impact on residential areas, he said: "One of the four points targeted by US missiles is in this area, and the missile was fired from the territory of a neighboring country on the Persian Gulf."
Baghaei described the technical dimensions of the attack: "For the preparation and launch of the highly precise PrSM missile, a large number of civilians were sacrificed."
He said that if schools had been open at the time of the attack, the number of those killed and wounded would have been several times those of Minab.
Regarding the munitions used, the spokesman said: "Four missiles were used, containing a total of 180,000 pellets. This was a great crime."
US admission
Baghaei referred to statements by US officials about the attack: "America has explicitly admitted to carrying out this action and has proudly said that this missile was used for the first time to measure the extent of destruction."
"The target of this attack was civilians," he said. "Within a 500-meter radius, four launches took place that were not military targets, and a school, a girls' sports hall and a boys' sports facility were among the targets."
Lamerd: a record for history
Baghaei said the purpose of the media delegation's visit was to help document the crime "both for Iranians and future generations, and for the world, so they know how America and Israel tried to bring the Iranian people to their knees through fear and intimidation."
He stressed that the action constitutes a war crime "both in terms of the use of a prohibited weapon and in terms of the target chosen and the killing of civilians."
Baghaei, accompanied by a delegation of national and international media, visited the residential area struck by US missiles and the damaged sports hall and grounds, which have become a memorial to the martyrs of the Ramadan war, particularly the children and athletes.
On the first day of the Ramadan war, three new PrSM ballistic missiles fired by the US struck a residential area and a sports hall in Lamerd. The missiles, tested for the first time, released thousands of tungsten pellets, killing 21 people and wounding 140, and causing irreparable damage to the people of the county.
